The Ultimate Guide to AR-15 80% Lowers

What is an AR-15 80% Lower?

An 80% lower receiver is a receiver blank that has not been fully machined. Because the fire control pocket and trigger pin holes have not been milled out, the ATF does not classify this item as a firearm. It is simply a piece of aluminum. This means you can purchase it without a background check or FFL transfer, provided you comply with your local and state laws.

Material Battle: Why 6061 Billet Beats 7075 Forged

Many builders default to 7075 forged lowers because "that's what the military uses." However, for a custom home build, 6061-T6 Billet Aluminum is often the superior choice.

  • Superior Anodizing: 7075 aluminum contains high amounts of zinc, which can lead to inconsistent anodizing (sometimes looking purple or uneven). 6061 aluminum takes anodizing perfectly, resulting in a deep, rich, consistent black finish that looks better on your rifle.
  • Corrosion Resistance: 6061 is famous for its extreme corrosion resistance (it is often used in marine applications). 7075 is more prone to corrosion if the surface finish is scratched. If you want a rifle that lasts a lifetime without "blooming" or oxidizing, 6061 is the clear winner.
  • Easier Machining: Because 7075 is extremely hard, it wears out your drill bits and end mills faster. 6061 is easier to machine at home, resulting in cleaner cuts and longer life for your jig tools.

FAQ: Finishing Your Build

What parts do I need to finish my 80% lower?

To complete your build, you will need an 80% lower jig to mill the safety selector, trigger pocket, and trigger pins. Once machined, you can install a standard AR-15 Lower Parts Kit (LPK), buffer tube assembly, and your choice of upper receiver.

Why choose Tactical Machining?

We aren't just a retailer; we are the manufacturer. We mill our 6061 billet lowers in-house to ensure tighter tolerances than standard forgings. When you buy from us, you are buying direct from the machine shop in Florida.
