80 Lowers

Tactical Machining offers a few types of 80 Lowers for the home builder or DIY enthusiast. Remember to follow all Federal, State and Local laws when building our 80 lowers. If you're looking for more information on what an 80 lower is, check out our What is an 80 lower page. We'll cover what 80s we offer on this page and direct you to whichever category you're interested in.

80% AR-15 Lowers

Looking for 80% AR-15 Lowers? This is the most commonly built and the one that started it all. Currently all of our offerings are from Cerro forgings and have the ability to be laser engraved as well as anodized. Some manufacturers offer billet lowers that may suit your needs. We also offer AR-15 handguards and AR-15 Upper receivers for completing your build. If you want all three, check out our 80% Build kits.

80% 308 Lowers

We started manufacturing our 308 Lowers in 2009 and have been doing so ever since. We offer two styles of 80% 308 lowers from both forgings and billet. We offer billet 80% .308 lowers in the LR-308 platform as forged SR-25 style platform which we call the TM-10.2 platform.

80% 1911 Frames

In 2011 Tactical Machining was the first to offer commercially available 80% 1911 frames and they were wildly successful. This was our 80% TM Recon Frame. Due to issues with the way the castings were designed and a lack of information on how to reliabilty build 1911s we switched to making a standard 80% 1911 Government Frame. In 2020 we will be bringing back the TM Recon Frame with a new casting house and plenty of instruction.

80% TM-22

In 2011 we introduced the 80% 10/22 receiver we call the TM-22. It was made from billet just like our 80% 308 lowers and is compatible with all 10/22 parts that have been manufactured over the years. Some required minor fitment but overall assembling was easy. We tightened up some key areas to make these things aftermarket 10/22 receivers accurate.

A good primer on how 80% Lowers are completed

What is an 80% Lower or 80 Percent Lower?

An 80% Lower is a partially completed piece of material that requires special tooling and skills to be completed and considered a firearm. Unlike a firearm receiver it is not required to be transferred through a Federal Firearms Licensed holder (FFL).

Legalities

A lot of questions have been raised about how our 80% lowers, or 80 Percent Lowers can be considered non-firearms. We've received a determination letter from the ATF stating that the ATF does not view this as a firearm because to complete the receiver it requires specialized skills and tooling.

Do I need an FFL to make a firearm?

In a short answer, no. As long as you can legally own the firearm in the state, county and city you reside in you are allowed to manufacture a firearm for your own personal use. No serial number is required however it is suggested to engrave a serial number, model and manufacturer on your receiver in case it is lost or stolen.

All National Firearms Act (NFA) regulations apply to your firearm. You may create a short-barreled rifle out of your firearm via a BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosive) Form 1 after BATFE approval.

Recommended Tools

Completing an 80% Lower can be accomplished using a variety of tooling and methods, the most common methods require using a manual mill or a drill press. Both manual mills and drill presses can be purchased off web sites like craigslist or ebay as well as from local tooling suppliers. Once you have the machine of your choice, end mills and drills will be required to complete the remaining operations.
